Paul's Story

Paul’s journey with Care & Connects began when he became the guardian for his younger brother, who transitioned into the same Supported Independent Living (SIL) house as his other brother.

“They’re great communicators and genuinely care.”

Transition to supported independent living

Initially, Paul’s brother moved from a public trustee and hospital setting into the SIL house.

“When we moved him to Supported Independent Living, it was a big change from the hospital care he was used to. But Care & Connects really went above and beyond to make the transition smooth, and after some time to settle in he adapted well,” reflects Paul.

Overcoming funding challenges

A significant challenge arose when the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) cut funding. “Even when the funding wasn’t there, Care & Connects bent over backwards to help us and kept looking after him while we were trying to get the money sorted out,” Paul says.

Support and guidance

Navigating the complexities of NDIS was new to Paul, but we were able to find him everything he required.

“They’ve given me all the help I’ve needed. They recently helped us move to a new support coordinator – Joyce from Trilogy – who has been absolutely amazing. Between her and the Care & Connects team, I’ve slowly got my head around it. They always answer my calls and help me understand,” he explains.

Environment promotes wellbeing

The SIL house provided the ideal living environment for his brothers. “They’ve got their own roommates and are well looked after. My younger brother, who was always skinny, has actually put on weight since living there,” Paul emphasises.

Consistent communication and care

Paul regularly communicates with Care & Connects’ operations and service management staff, who play crucial roles in managing care. “They are awesome and take great care of us. They make sure everything is running smoothly,” he says, appreciating their dedication and effective communication.

A house becomes a home

Paul’s brothers suffer from a rapidly deteriorating disease, yet they have found stability in the SIL house. “My older brother is still adjusting, but my younger brother now feels like it’s home,” Paul observes.

Paul says his experience working with comes down to our personalised support, effective communication, and commitment to his brothers’ wellbeing. “They’re great communicators and genuinely care.”
