Dennis & Pam's Story

When Dennis suffered a stroke, it led to a significant change in lifestyle for both him and his wife Pam. “Dennis has had his disability for over 8 years, but it was the last stroke that really changed things,” Pam explains. “He weighs 97 kilos, so helping him with tasks like showering became increasingly difficult for me.”

Dennis’s stroke resulted in four-months of rehabilitation stint and Pam was initially advised to consider nursing home care. “I wasn’t prepared to put him in a nursing home,” she says. “The one time he went into respite, he became so depressed in care. It was really important to both of us that he stayed at home.”

It was then that Dennis’s occupational therapist recommended Care & Connects, who have become “like family”, according to Pam, for him and Pam since.

“They’re brilliant, like family now…and Dennis loves to joke with them”

Personalised care and routine

With the help of Care & Connects, Pam and Dennis have established a routine that works for them. “They come three times a day for two hours each time, at 8-10, 2-4, and 8-10 at night,” Pam details. This schedule has been pivotal in maintaining Dennis’s care and wellbeing at home.

Building a relationship with carers

The care team, a consistent group of five, has become an integral part of their lives. “They’re brilliant – a great support to us. We talk about each other’s families, and Dennis loves to joke with them,” Pam shares. This strong rapport and familiarity have been crucial for Dennis’s wellbeing.

Maintaining dignity and respect

Care & Connects’ team not only assists with physical needs but also ensures that Dennis’s dignity is maintained. “They make everything as good as it can be for him,” says Pam.

Effective communication and monitoring

Pam emphasises the strong communication with our team: “They send me a new roster every fortnight and are always available for any queries or changes.” This approach is essential to ensure we can promptly address any concerns or potential health issues.

Pam says she feels fortunate to have a dedicated group of carers. “I didn’t know how much help I needed at first. They helped us work it all out, and they’re very accommodating with changes, like family events,” she says.
